The Gusto integration links your Empuls tenant to your Gusto payroll account. Beyond the standard HR directory sync, Gusto adds payroll-specific signals — compensation tier, benefits eligibility, and pay cycle dates — that Empuls can use to scope rewards and recognition programs appropriately. Open the integrations hub in your tenant at https://<your-empuls-url>/home/integrations and click Gusto.

Before you start

  • You must be a Super Admin in Empuls.
  • You need an admin account in Gusto with permission to authorize apps.
  • This integration is payroll-aware. Confirm with your finance team which fields are appropriate to expose in Empuls before connecting.

How the integration works

1

Open the Gusto card

From the Integrations hub, click Gusto and then Configure.
2

Authorize Empuls in Gusto

Empuls redirects to Gusto’s OAuth consent screen. Sign in with a Gusto admin and approve the requested scopes.
3

Confirm directory preview

Empuls shows the company name and a sample of employee records returned by Gusto so you can verify the right tenant.
4

Choose what to sync

The default sync covers names, emails, departments, and employment status. Opt in to extended fields (compensation tier, benefits eligibility, pay schedule) only if you want Empuls programs to reference them.
5

Run initial sync

Click Start sync. Empuls imports active Gusto users on a recurring schedule.

Differences vs HRIS-only sync

Gusto is a payroll system first and an HRIS second. Use this integration when:
  • You want compensation-tiered reward programs (for example, scoped to non-exempt employees).
  • Your benefits eligibility (health plans, equity grants) should drive Empuls benefits visibility.
  • You don’t have a separate HRIS — Gusto holds your full employee directory.
If you have a dedicated HRIS like Workday or HiBob, run that as the source of truth for directory data and use Gusto only for the payroll-specific fields.

Reconnect or disconnect

Standard Reconnect (refresh OAuth) and Disconnect (stop sync) actions are available from the integration’s action menu.

Limits and gotchas

  • Compensation fields are sensitive. Restrict access via access control so only finance admins see them in Empuls.
  • Gusto’s rate limits apply. Initial sync of large workforces may take several cycles.
  • Edits to synced fields in Empuls are overwritten by the next Gusto sync.
